About Fakeout Kitchen

For most of my life, I dealt with an itchy mouth and stomach issues whenever I ate fruits and vegetables — not a few, but most of them. I avoided entire sections of the grocery store and wrote off whole categories of food as simply not for me. I accepted it and moved on.

Then I started spending real time in Europe. Eating from kitchen gardens. Markets where the tomatoes still had dirt on them. Meals where the ingredients came from a few kilometers away and hadn't been treated with anything. And something strange happened: I was fine. More than fine. I ate things I hadn't touched in decades and felt nothing — no reaction, no swelling, no discomfort. I ate them again the next day to make sure. Still nothing.

It took a while to accept what that meant. I wasn't allergic to the food. I was reacting to what had been done to it — the pesticides, the preservatives, the coatings that make produce survive a three-week supply chain. The food itself was never the problem.

My family and I came home and started over. We switched to organic, non-GMO, fresh, and as homemade as we could manage. The difference was real and immediate. But it also exposed something: eating cleanly is genuinely hard. The labels are confusing. The swaps aren't obvious. The restaurants and takeout menus we love don't change just because we did.

That's what Fakeout Kitchen is for. The recipes here are our attempt to make the food we actually want to eat — the Chipotle bowls, the Sweetgreen salads, the comfort food we grew up with — using ingredients we feel good about. Each recipe surfaces the swaps that matter most: the seed oils that can be replaced, the refined sugars that don't need to be there, the seasoning blends hiding additives when ground spices do the same job better.

We hope you'll find the recipes, the Pantry, and the ingredient guides useful in eating a little healthier and a little more cleanly. It's worth the effort. We know that now firsthand.

How the site works

Anyone can submit a recipe. Every submission goes through a short moderation review before it's published — we read each one to make sure it's accurate, complete, and genuinely useful. There's no paywall and no account required to browse.

Affiliate links

When a recipe identifies a cleaner version of an ingredient, we link to an Amazon search for that product. If you buy something through one of those links, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. We're an Amazon Associate. Every swap recommendation reflects what we actually think is worth buying, not what pays a higher rate.
